Description
The Covered Wagon is an annual publication the Shasta Historical Society puts out every year. It is a collection of short articles on the history of Shasta County and its pioneers. The 2006 issue features a glimpse of the Italian Culture, the Greek Culture, and the Chinese Culture. Our editorial team decided there was more to tell about the discovery of gold, about landing in San Francisco, the travels to Sacramento, how miners panned for gold, and the hazards of doing so. Ralph Hollibaugh's rare collector's items - handwritten letters painstakingly deciphered to facilitate your enjoyment in reading about the lonesome and often lengthy time between word from home and our western travelers. A few excerpts are included to pique your memory of Redding in an earlier time. All are for your enjoyment. "Brastow, Harris & Co.: Updated Information" shows what research can bring us.
About the Author
The Shasta Historical Society was formed on January 19, 1930, by a group of people who had been collecting then-living pioneers' accounts of their lives in the Gold Rush days. These accounts were then published in the newspaper as "The Trails Of 49." Collecting pioneer stories remains one of the activities of the society, but now it is a larger educational, non-profit organization. Its purposes are not only to collect, but to preserve knowledge about the ongoing history of Shasta County and, when appropriate of adjoining areas, to maintain a depository of such historical material to serve as a research library for its members and others and to spread the knowledge of local history and enjoyment to the public.
