Description
The history of the San Fernando Valley in Southern California is replete with thousands and thousands of names, all of which designate a place to be recalled, possibly a physical feature of importance, or a spot on the map representing a specific time and locale, conjuring up deeply held emotional ties. This is the story of how those names came about, especially the street signs clinging to metal poles on every corner, quietly waiting for their hidden secrets to flourish again in the light of day. In revealing the past, specific questions will be asked. Who named the street sign? Who does the street sign honor? How is the history of the "Valley," as the natives refer to the San Fernando Valley, reflected in these signs? In answering these question, s three epic periods will seek our attention. The period of Spanish influence, followed by Mexico's control of the land, and lastly the advent of Yankee presence in the Golden State. Three cultures and the mingling of many diverse people is the story captured on the ubiquitous street signs. There is much to learn from these silent sentinels.
About the Author
Livingston, Robert: - Robert Livingston was a high school history teacher in Los Angeles for thirty-eight years. He taught U.S. History and Government, Economics, and Comparative Religions. In retirement, he joined a local Kiwanis Club and supervised three high school Key Clubs. He has written four books, each of which explores America's racial history in the military and in professional sports. He has written extensively on the causes of World War I and the reasons behind Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. He is currently writing a book on the New Deal and its impact on Black Americans.
