About the Author
Gabler, Jen: - Jen Gabler brings together an educational background in the sciences and a natural flair for the arts to create beautiful and moving books, both for children and for adults. Jen's illustrations are characterised by detailed pencil sketches in vibrant palettes, her children's stories by flowing rhymes that tell important and uplifting tales, and her novels by exciting narratives that unfold around individuals with powerful characters and inter-relationships. Tackling life-changing topics such as birth and death, ethics and immorality, and the protection or destruction of the environment, Jen's work is more than a great read: it is a vital read.Gabler, Sander: - 'Vinny the Vaquita' is Sander Gabler's first work. This young boy loves cetaceans: the group of marine mammals that includes whales and dolphins, as well as their less well-known cousins, the porpoises. Shortly before his third birthday, Sander heard about vaquitas for the first time, while visiting the Texan island of Galveston with his family, and immediately became enchanted by them. Sander decided that he wanted to do something to try to help save this tiny species from extinction, and so this book was born. The young Sander came up with the story-line himself and named the characters (including the right whale in the tale, named after his grandfather). Sander then played a very active role in directing the illustrations; even at such a young age, his vision for the project was always clear and beautiful and his eye for detail exceptional. Sander also stars in the final two pages of the book, and is joined by his younger sister, Evelyn, on the second of these.
