- ARThematics Plus: Integrated Projects in Math, Art and Beyond
Description
ARThematics Plus: Integrated Projects in Math, Art and Beyond captivates students by using mathematical concepts to create works of art. Employing a multi-faceted, participatory approach, each chapter further extends the lesson into such areas as language arts, social studies, science and music. A happy hybrid of math and art, ARThematics Plus helps teachers comply with NCTM Standards.
About the Author
Stefanie Mandelbaum, an artist/mathematician, taught both mathematics and art courses on all levels in school and community settings, including 17 years as an adjunct assistant professor at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. She has worked extensively with students suffering from math anxiety, learning disabilities and attention-deficit disorder. Mandelbaum holds a BS in mathematics from Queens College (CUNY), a Master of Arts in Teaching (mathematics) from Montclair University and an MFA (sculpture) from Pratt Institute. The lessons in ARThematics Plus: Integrated Projects in Math, Art and Beyond are based on her 2 decades of student and teacher workshops she presented in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tri-state area. View her artwork at arthematics.wordpress.com. Jacqueline Sideman Guttman, a consultant in arts education and outreach, is founder of the Arts for Life Network of New Jersey, which provides participatory arts programming for older adults. A former flutist and music teacher, she has written numerous teacher supplements for performances and arts workshops that integrate the arts with all subject areas, including the "Tangents" sections of ARThematics Plus. She is also the author of The Partners in Excellence Handbook, published by the National Guild for Community Arts Education. Guttman holds a BS in music education from the State University of New York at Potsdam, and Masters Degrees in both music education and arts administration from New York University, where she was an adjunct assistant professor in the Performing Arts Administration program. Not incidentally, she was a math-anxious student throughout her school career and describes herself as "visually tone-deaf."
