Following a parole violation, shifty ex-con Joe Braxton (Richard Pryor) is "volunteered" to drive eight special needs children from Philadelphia to Washington state. During the cross-country trip, Joe becomes unexpectedly dedicated to helping the kids, also falling for their pretty teacher (Cicely Tyson) along the way.
