Worlds Not Visible follows Newlanders Rabka Samman and Kuri Mafouz as they try to make a life together in a wild and dangerous country. The people of the Newlands fled from the Old Protectorate and the despotism of the Protectorate's rulers. But even in the Newlands, far across the Wustani Sea, all is not peaceful. There, the people are divided into family-based Houses, which are often at odds with one other. And then there are the "others"
There are the shreeliala, an aquatic species, with whom the Newlanders have an uneasy truce. No one's quite certain what the shreeliala agenda is, whose side they might be on, or what internal conflicts drive their society.
And there are the kohrina, a semi-nomadic reptilian species with whom the Newlanders are in constant conflict, since they and the Newlanders share some of the same territory. There have been frequent wars, battles, and killings between these two species since the Newlanders' arrival, largely due to miscommunications between the kohrina and the Newlanders, but also due to the Newlanders building their towns and cities on land the kohrina claim as their own.
In this complicated world, the search for a way to co-exist will be neither easy nor quick.
Stephen Leigh, who has also written under the name S.L. Farrell, is a Cincinnati-based author who has published thirty-one novels and nearly sixty pieces of short fiction. His work has won and been nominated for awards in both science fiction and fantasy genres. Steve is married to his best friend Denise; they have two children. His interests include music, the martial art aikido, fine art, history, culture, anthropology, sociology, and finding spare bits of free time. He doesn't have much success at that last one. He taught Creative Writing at Northern Kentucky University for over 20 years and has been a frequent speaker to writers' groups.
His recent novels include Bound to a Single Sun (2022), A Crowd of Stars (2020), A Rising Moon (2018), A Fading Sun (2017), The Crow of Connemara (2015), and Immortal Muse (2014). He is also a long-time contributor to the Wild Cards series, edited by George R.R. Martin.
Publisher's Weekly has called him "one of the strongest voices in fantasy" and Booklist has said of his Cloudmages Trilogy (written under the pseudonym S.L Farrell) that it was "Good enough to cast in gold."
