Ian Murphy, in despair from the death of his mother, encounters an evangelist named Peter Stubbs. The direct descendant of Stumpf Peeter, a man executed as a werewolf in 16th-century Germany, Stubbs believes his kind are the hand of God's judgment and has drafted Ian as his chosen protégé.

During the following months, Ian unwittingly kills his best friend and the girl he loves, but rejects Stubbs and attempts to make a future for himself. Violence and tragedy follow all his efforts until he confronts Peter once and for all.
