In the world before, Sara Weyer is a mathematician on the verge of a breakthrough-a way to harness the gaping blackness between numbers. But something is hiding in that darkness. Something not meant to be found. Enter the man in black. He is a gaunt figure, pale skin, his tailcoat draped behind him like a pair of folded wings. He comes into the Weyer home claiming good intentions-but now no one can make him leave. As his grip tightens around Sara's family and madness descends, the terrifying consequences of her work will finally be revealed. In the world after, in a land of a reddening sun and endless quakes, Sara wakes one night surrounded by gunmen and Corson, their towering leader. They pursue something Corson calls the vermilion-whose identity only he knows. If they divert for long, a piercing sound batters their minds, forcing them toward an unknown destination. No one knows the source of this scream or why it calls. But they must find it soon, for a planet-sized inferno barrels toward them like a storm. The world before. The world after. Worlds will meet.
