Some experiments demand a subject. The void is happy to oblige.
In this tale of reckless curiosity and terrifying consequences, two close friends, a brilliant young man named Richard Upton Pickman and an older, more reserved scholar, venture into the secluded, mist-shrouded ruins of an ancient stone circle. They are not seeking archaeological insight, but a direct encounter with the supernatural.
Pickman, driven by an insatiable hunger for forbidden knowledge, has prepared a ritual based on a mysterious manuscript to summon an entity from the outer void. His companion is a hesitant observer, drawn by friendship and a chilling fascination.
As the ritual begins under the cold light of the moon, the energy and danger in the atmosphere become palpable. However, the final, dreadful climax is not a spectacular manifestation, but a subtle shift in reality. The scholar is left alone to discover the terrifying fate of his friend--a fate far worse than death.
The Trap (often collected with other works) is a classic example of collaborative fiction from the Lovecraft circle, originally outlined by Lovecraft and completed by Henry S. Whitehead. It is a potent story of summoning, cosmic entrapment, and the unbearable horror of being taken by forces that cannot be reasoned with.
Step into the circle. The universe will take care of the rest.
