The Heavenly Kingdom - Paperback

The Asemana Classics series is a publishing initiative by Asemana dedicated to publishing and revisiting enduring classics of Persian literature as well as masterpieces of modern Iranian literature. Through carefully prepared and thoughtfully presented editions, the series seeks to build a bridge between the literary heritage of the past and readers of today, offering new opportunities to engage with some of the most significant works of Persian culture and literature. As the fourth title in the Asemana Classics series, The Heavenly Kingdom, Bahram Sadeghi's enduring work, is being published-a short yet profound and influential work that occupies a unique place in the history of modern Iranian fiction. First published in 1961, The Heavenly Kingdom offers an enigmatic and haunting narrative of death, loneliness, guilt, and human anxiety in an unstable and uncertain world. In this work, Sadeghi dissolves the boundaries between reality and nightmare, reason and madness, life and death, creating a world in which the everyday gradually assumes a strange and terrifying form. Its compressed language, black humor, unsettling atmosphere, and complex narrative structure have made The Heavenly Kingdom one of the most remarkable experiments in twentieth-century Persian fiction. The enduring power of The Heavenly Kingdom lies in Sadeghi's ability to transform individual anxieties into broader questions about the human condition. Its characters find themselves trapped in a world where certainties collapse and the individual is confronted with death, decay, fear, and the meaning of existence. Beneath the story's dark and at times terrifying atmosphere lies a bitter humor and a critical perspective that call into question human relationships, self-deception, the desire for immortality, and humanity's attempts to escape its fate. From this perspective, The Heavenly Kingdom is not merely a haunting tale but a literary and philosophical meditation on the human condition and our confrontation with mortality. Today, The Heavenly Kingdom is regarded as one of the most distinctive works of modern Persian literature and an outstanding example of Iran's experimental and unconventional fiction.
