That Makes Me Mad!

Psychotherapy

A Memoir

A new, evidence-based approach to anger control for the use and benefit of clinicians and laypeople. This is a mental health therapist's astute and humorous memoir of career experience made provocative by focusing on a cultural discrepancy between our language and neuroscience. This discrepancy has not been examined by the mental health profession, but it represents a contradiction hiding in plain sight. Accessible to therapists and the general public, this is a personal, insightful, and useful accounting. Using the Anger-Loss Model, this account provides a more easily understood pathway to one of the most fundamental tasks of psychotherapy: knowing yourself. Later chapters offer extended clinical advice about therapeutic practice, as well as an appendix of handouts with permission for reproduction.

[The book's premise is] fascinating... I suspect the book will be very useful!

-Kristen A. Lindquist, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (soon to be affiliated with "The" Ohio State University)

A warm and insightful book written with clarity and honesty. I felt encouraged by the premise, and challenged at the same time. Anyone who picks up this book opens a window into both their behavior and their future choices. I wish I had written this book.

-Tobias A. Ryan, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Adjunct Professor of Psychology, University of Portland, Oregon

L. Arnold, John: - John Arnold was the Clinical Director of a non-profit psychiatric day treatment program for children and families and a private practice psychotherapist for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. He served as a clinical supervisor and case consultant and did contract supervision and treatment consulting. He was formerly on the State of Oregon Board of Clinical Social Workers' "short list" to supervise LCSW's on stipulated agreements. After 35 years of thinking he should write a book about an unexamined contradiction between the popular language and what neuroscience tells us about how emotions are created, he gave up. But like that Zen thing about finding after you stop looking, the book unexpectedly seemed to write itself. Not a workaholic, he spent many years whitewater rafting wilderness rivers and motorcycling in the western states, Canada, and Mexico. Retired, he now lives with his wife, Christie, in Visalia, California.
