This 1998 novel by indigenous author Zainab Amadahy explores the timeless struggle for sovereignty against colonization through an interstellar lens. Set on the violet planet Palmares, this space opera follows an ensemble cast caught between the Consortium's mining operations and the rebel forces fighting to protect their world.
Major Leith Eaglefeather arrives on Palmares believing his role is to protect citizens and quilidon mines from rebels called the Kituhwa. The Earth-born officer expects a straightforward peacekeeping mission. Instead, he discovers the Peacekeeping Forces function more as an occupying army than protectors. The beautiful, unspoiled planet is being stripped of quilidon, the galaxy's most valuable resource, while its people resist destruction of their world.
Zaria Aquene, a local dancer enlisted as Eaglefeather's spy, operates as a double agent with her own agenda. She uses the Major's infatuation strategically, but their relationship complicates her mission. As Eaglefeather questions his superiors and the truth behind the occupation, Zaria faces an impossible question: can she kill for her planet's survival if the person she must eliminate has become her friend?
The novel examines military occupation, resource extraction, and the moral complexities of resistance. The violet planet Palmares serves as backdrop for questions about loyalty, truth, and the cost of freedom. Characters navigate deception, shifting alliances, and the gap between official narratives and ground-level reality.
