Born in Hope, his early life was shaped by movement, challenge, and resilience. Seeking broader opportunities, his mother relocated the family to Chicago before eventually settling in San Francisco-a transition that would mark a turning point in his life. Growing up as an only child in complex family circumstances, LaErtes developed a sharp awareness of human behavior, conflict, and survival- elements that now define his writing. His creative journey began with music in his early school years and evolved into a passion for storytelling during high school. There, he became a prominent voice in student journalism, serving as Editor, Music Reporter, and Current Events Journalist for California's first Afro-American high school newspaper-an experience that sharpened both his voice and perspective. LaErtes later served in the United States Army as a Strategic Communications Command soldier. His time in the military brought both discipline and hardship, including injuries that led to ongoing medical challenges and corrective surgeries. During recovery, a deeply personal turning point emerged: what began as a letter to reconnect with his daughter evolved into a much larger creative awakening. That moment reignited a long-dormant gift for storytelling, ultimately leading to multiple unpublished works and the release of Evolution. His writing is unapologetically direct-infused with humor, pain, history, and a vivid understanding of human struggle.
