Phelps, Elizabeth Stuart: - Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward (1844-1911), usually published as Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, was an American novelist, essayist, reform writer, and one of the most widely read women authors of the nineteenth century. Born Mary Gray Phelps, she adopted the name Elizabeth Stuart Phelps in honor of her mother, who was also a writer and died when Phelps was young.
