5.The Writings of the Apostolic Fathers - by Paul Foster

The Writings of the Apostolic Fathers
The Writings of the Apostolic Fathers refer to a group of miscellaneous Christian writings produced in the first and second centuries. The authors of these writings were considered by seventeenth century scholars to be the next generation of Apostles and as a result were named The Apostolic Fathers. Perceived by many scholars to be the most important collection of post-New Testament writings, a number of these texts were in fact considered for the Canon of the New Testament but later rejected. Their obvious significance stems from the fact that they are the first Christian writings produced outside the New Testament Canon and as such contain an essential insight into the development of the early Christian Church and Christian thinking. Much Christian Doctrine came, not from the New Testament, but from the writings produced by the early church and in particular the writings of the Apostolic Fathers. Therefore, these texts are crucial to an understanding of the shaping of Christian thought and Christian doctrine. This volume will provide readers with an overview of each of the eleven texts, together with a general introduction. Communicating the best recent scholarship to a broad audience, each chapter offers a treatment of the most controversial aspects of each text and discusses the theology of each of the writings in order to orient readers to the development of Christian thinking in the second century. Each article ends with a carefully chosen select bibliography to enable further reading.About the AuthorPaul Foster is Senior Lecturer in New Testament at the University of Edinburgh, UK. He is author of Community, Law and Mission in Matthew's Gospel, Mohr Siebeck, 2004, and editor of The Writings of the Apostolic Fathers (T&T Clark, 2007).

6.Oasis of Wisdom: The Worlds of the Desert Fathers and Mothers - by David G. R. Keller

Oasis of Wisdom: The Worlds of the Desert Fathers and Mothers
The life and wisdom of the desert fathers and mothers is not only retained in historical volumes, but has been a constant presence throughout the development of the church. A formative influence since the time of the early Christians, this wisdom has the power to transform and nurture even today.Using six fundamental aspects of desert monastic life as windows - The Cell, Patience, Praxis, Labor and Time, Solitude and Silence, and Humility - Oasis of Wisdom reveals the world that created the wisdom of early Christian monastic men and women. With this experiential approach to learning, Keller goes beyond simple reflection by providing substantial historical background, including the environment of solitude, ascetic disciplines, labor, and daily life experiences. Touching on the social, religious, political, and linguistic influences of the culture, it is an ideal introduction for modern readers with limited backgrounds in theology or church history.Oasis of Wisdom is ideal for those seeking spiritual mentoring or a discipline of prayer, and will appeal to those from all denominations and backgrounds, from those new to church history to oblates. 9.Tsunami'd by God: Healing of a Father-Wound - by Philip Scott

Tsunami'd by God: Healing of a Father-Wound
You have in your hands a book that is my humble reflection on one of the deepest wounds in the hearts of men and women, rich and poor, the ordained clergy and the laity, the believer and the unbeliever - the "father wound." In my travels throughout the United States, Latin America, Korea and other countries, I have seen this wound in a very substantial number of people that have attended my retreats, in counseling, in "chance meetings" that seemed at first just a coincidence - when in fact they were God-incidences. When one is wounded, one does not really "see" life well. He or she cannot enjoy his journey of life. Indeed, my experience and those of many others who have shared their similar experiences with me, is that one's wounds are so "loud" or so large that the vantage point of life is obscured. Such people "see" through a lens clouded with fears, self-hatred, insecurity, shame and have built a wall around one's heart that is their way trying to be self-sufficient and strong. Life often is a battle of survival, of fighting against inner turmoil. One cannot see the beauty of God's plan. Often, if God the Father's dream is experienced within one's heart at all, it plays more like a "nightmare." In these pages I want to open my heart and share my own journey of healing from my own father wound. It is NOTHING like a three-hour movie that begins and then hours later ends with the words - THE END. Our hearts are mysterious with seasons, like the seasons of our year. And at first, we do not understand the various seasons found there. Yet we slowly grow to understand that this wound did not just appear overnight, so it will not heal overnight either. We are, as Scriptures say in Jeremiah, clay in the Father's hands: "'Can I not do to you, ... as this potter has done?' says the LORD. Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand..." (Jer 18:6) This clay must be turned over and over again by events that expose our brokenness. Likewise, this earth of our hearts must be turned over so our hearts will become fertile with each season of tears. I would like to let you peek into my heart. It was once a heart with a crater-size father wound. With time and after a strong conversion experience where my Lord Jesus became more real than life itself, I was slowly and gently taken deeply into my heart by the Divine Healer and Creator of our hearts. This process involved some counseling but mostly through the great "I AM" found in every tabernacle of every Catholic Church. In the upcoming pages I will share with you also my heart felt discovery of learning to love as a spiritual father - about "fathering" spiritual sons and daughters in an age where so many live in houses where they are not really noticed by their parents. I will also discuss my initial encounter with my Papa and what it has been to be fathered by Him. My life has become a sharing of my daily events with my Father. It is no longer me facing every new challenge on my own, but He and me ("Us") together walking the "narrow" path. I wish I could just sit with you over a cup of coffee and just talk and help you listen to your own heart. This is not possible, so we must accept the medium of this book to assist in enabling God's work to be completed in us. It is a book that is written with simplicity because God is so perfectly simple Himself, so much so that we can never wrap our understanding around Him. So, let Jesus come to you. ASK Him to come close to you. Be not afraid! He is the Divine Healer who reveals to us the Father's face. You who hold this book in your hands are called to be a saint - to live in the Sonship of Jesus. Be not afraid! You are the Father's.

12.Early Christian Writings: The Apostolic Fathers

Early Christian Writings: The Apostolic Fathers
The writings in this volume cast a glimmer of light upon the emerging traditions and organization of the infant church, during an otherwise little-known period of its development. A selection of letters and small-scale theological treatises from a group known as the Apostolic Fathers, several of whom were probably disciples of the Apostles, they provide a first-hand account of the early Church and outline a form of early Christianity still drawing on the theology and traditions of its parent religion, Judaism. Included here are the first Epistle of Bishop Clement of Rome, an impassioned plea for harmony; The Epistle of Polycarp; The Epistle of Barnabas; The Didache; and the Seven Epistles written by Ignatius of Antioch--among them his moving appeal to the Romans that they grant him a martyr's death. 15.Jesus Christ - Quantum Physicist: Why modern science needs the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit to explain our world - by Dirk Schneider

Jesus Christ - Quantum Physicist: Why modern science needs the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit to explain our world
Does modern natural science suggest the existence of the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit? How can we explain eternity and Heaven? Who is the Holy Spirit? Physicist Dirk Schneider beckons his readers to follow him on an enthralling journey of discovery over the course of which he comes up with an entirely new theory. In order to be able to explain the world we live in from the perspective of quantum physics, the existence of the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit is apparently a necessity. Schneider's analysis uncovers surprising and easy-to-understand congruencies between the results of physics experiments and statements made in the Bible. What's more: the phenomena of quantum physics are easier to understand with the assistance of Biblical statements than they are without the Bible.Table of Contents1. A long nightmare begins2. A case of hay fever changes the fate of the world3. How to alter the course of the past4. What does "eternity" mean?5. Why New York is a neighboring city of San Francisco6. What is omnipresence?7. The most magnificent experiment of all times8. What do the terms "God" and "Heaven" mean?9. Does the moon exist even if no one is looking?10. The secret of the Holy Spirit11. Jesus Christ-the Son of GodAbout the AuthorPhysicist Dirk Schneider was born in Karlsruhe (Germany) in 1965. He began to take a keen interest in the secrets of the universe at a very young age and became an active member of an astronomy club as an adolescent. As a young man and student of physics he discovered the links between quantum physics and spirituality. He developed a special passion for this topic and explored the thought processes that are evident in both, natural science and Christian faith. He wrote his book "Jesus Christ - Quantum Physicist" after numerous conversations with pastors, natural scientists, theologians and philosophers. It shows how believing in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit can indeed be compatible with a modern scientific world view.
