The best David McCullough books split into presidential lives and stories of things Americans built, so the first choice is between a person and a project. Length matters almost as much as subject, since his books range from a slim account of one Pennsylvania flood to a presidential biography that runs past a thousand pages.
Start with 1776 if you want the Revolution at a fast clip, one year of retreats and gambles seen from both armies. If war holds less appeal than invention, The Wright Brothers is the shorter and lighter door in, a story about two stubborn mechanics teaching themselves to fly.
Two of these books won the Pulitzer Prize and two took the National Book Award, but the more useful questions are how much time you have and which century pulls you in. Four run past six hundred pages, while the flood history and the late essay collection fit into a few evenings.
