1.On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft - by Stephen King

Craft advice reads differently when it arrives wrapped in a biography, because you can see what the rule cost the person handing it over. Instruction turns up as a by-product in all three of these, which suits a writer who resents being told what to do. A van hit its author on a Maine roadside partway through the drafting, and the closing pages of On Writing were finished in a body that had come apart. The first half is childhood, teaching and the drinking years. The second half is the toolbox: vocabulary, grammar, the paragraph as the true unit. It is the least mystical craft book here and the least interested in granting anybody permission.
