Without Obligation - Paperback

What if the Gospel was never about how tightly you could hold on to God-but about discovering that He has been holding you all along?

Marta Ellison has spent a lifetime doing Christianity well.

She knows the verses. She serves the church. She shows up. She keeps the lists, carries the responsibilities, says the right things, and has spent years trying to become the kind of person she thought God would be pleased to love.

Then, beside her mother's bed in a memory-care facility, everything begins to unravel.

Her mother can no longer remember the Scriptures she spent a lifetime memorizing.

And she asks the question Marta's religion has never taught her how to answer:

If I can't remember Him, will He still take me?

What follows is a deeply human Christian parable about grace, religious performance, fear, shame, church hurt, family, loss-and the astonishing possibility that the Gospel may be far better than the version many of us learned.

Through fourteen interconnected chapters, Marta begins to discover that:

• faith is not the strength of your grip
• God's face has not turned away
• grace is not a reward for spiritual performance
• your failures do not cancel your belonging
• repentance may be less about crawling back to God than discovering which direction you have been facing
• what God gives cannot be earned-and therefore cannot be repossessed when your strength runs out

Without Obligation is for Christians who still love Jesus but are tired.

For those exhausted by trying harder.

For those carrying religious guilt they cannot put down.

For those who have wondered whether God is disappointed in them.

For those healing from performance Christianity, legalism, church hurt, or spiritual burnout.

And for anyone who has spent years trying to reach a place in God's love that grace had already given them.

You can stop paddling.

The light never moved.

Welcome home.
