G.A. Henty (1832-1902) was a prolific author and journalist. He was best known for writing historical adventures based on his own experiences as a war correspondent with Standard newspaper. His first book for children, Out on the Pampas, was written in 1868. He wrote 122 books in total, most of which were for children, but also included novels for adults, non-fiction and short stories. Henty died on 16 November 1902 in Dorset, shortly before completing his last novel, By Conduct and Courage.
