War games, nuclear ones, start by accident in this 4K Ultra HD release of the 1983 thriller about a teenager and a Pentagon computer.
David Lightman goes looking for unreleased video games, finds a machine that does not know it is playing, and cannot convince anyone it was not an attack.
On the discs
Shout Factory's two disc edition, restored from a 4K scan of the original camera negative. That scan is what makes the difference here, because the film was shot dark on purpose.
Good to know
Reactions to the picture split. Most reviewers say it has never looked better. A few report grain and a dark image, which one solved by nudging the brightness. If you want a pristine modern look, this is a 1983 film and it still looks like one.
Synopsis
How about a game of Global Thermonuclear War? In this 1980s classic, Matthew Broderick stars as David Lightman, a teenage technology whiz who discovers that he can tap into a Defense Department computer from his home. But when David's seemingly harmless hacking sets a doomsday program in motion, he teams with a military computer expert (Dabney Coleman) to try to avert World War III. With Ally Sheedy, Barry Corbin.
