Meet Layla-an 18-year-old Filipino-American singer-songwriter and visual artist who grew up hearing the same thing you probably have: pick one. Music or art. Not both. Focus. Get serious.
This book is everything she learned from people who didn't listen to that advice.
THE VISION pairs Layla's honest peer stories with the true, unfiltered stories of the world's most legendary creators-told as gripping narratives, not textbook summaries.
Learn from Jean-Michel Basquiat making art on walls with nowhere to sleep at seventeen. Frida Kahlo picking up a paintbrush in a plaster corset because lying still was worse. Miles Davis finding his sound by following the instinct everyone else called weakness. J.K. Rowling submitting to the thirteenth agent after twelve rejections. Leonardo da Vinci refusing to choose between painting and science. Beethoven composing symphonies in complete silence. Toni Morrison writing before dawn in the margins of an exhausting life.
Each chapter includes Layla's honest peer story, a fully-rendered narrative of legendary creators, reflection questions, and a single practical challenge.
This book is for you if:
- You make things but struggle to share them
- You've been told your creative interests don't make sense together
- You've had your work rejected and don't know whether to keep going
- You feel like you're holding something back in what you create
- You want to learn from the best without being lectured by adults
Unlike creativity books written by experts reflecting from decades away, Layla is your peer-eighteen, just finished the journey you're on, honest about the failures and the moments she almost quit.
12 chapters. 20+ legendary creators across music, visual art, literature, architecture, and film.
From the author of The Comeback and The Voice (The Next Level Series, Books 1 & 2), Inspiring Stories for Teen Boys, and Inspiring Stories for Teen Girls.
