THE United Nation's Role in International Peacekeeping - Paperback

Post-Cold War peacekeeping sanctioned more use of force than during Cold-War interventions. The post-Cold War period has witnessed the emergence of the problem of so-called "failed" states. In response, the UN has taken on a new mandate of greater military involvement with the aim of enforcing the peace where lawlessness has taken over. The UN's old principle of consent, and non-use of military force has become seriously compromised and has lost considerable ground in the profile of 1990s peacekeeping. Interventions have been conducted in situations where conflict has not yet been terminated at the time of international deployment. These dramatic shifts in the nature of conflicts in the post-Cold War period need a mixture of both traditional and modern peacekeeping approaches.
