Sada Kazu Uyenishi's guide to Ju-Jutsu is a brilliant example of the internationalisation of Ju-jutsu and Judo. A key figure in the wave of Japanese popularity in the early 1900s, Uyenishi's work helps audiences gain a nuanced view on Ju-Jutsu's techniques, philosophies and tactics.
This 1907 guide acts as a definitive explanation of Ju-Jutsu in the wake of a boom in texts from less experienced or qualified authors. "Kazu" as the author was known on stage was a successful athlete and competitor in the wrestling matches held in music halls across the UK.
This guide showcases via film reels and photography how the relatively diminutive Kazu bested giants who were skilled in Catch, Greco and Freestyle wrestling.
As well as martial arts techniques and strategies, we also gain a better view of Uyenishi the man in this volume from his friends, students and contemporaries. A must have volume for those interested in Ju-Jutsu/Judo's global proliferation and fans of Bartitsu alike.
