The Saxophone Book: Book 1 by Jeff Coffin
THE SAXOPHONE BOOK is a comprehensive method created by 3x Grammy winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band/Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, the Mu'tet). This 3-volume instructional series presents a systematic approach to mastering what Jeff calls "The Big 5" musical fundamentals:
1) Listening
2) Tone/Dynamics
3) Articulation
4) Rhythm/Time
5) Harmony
Why Focus on Fundamentals?
Jeff Coffin believes fundamentals are the roots of musical learning. Strong roots enable growth. These books develop and strengthen core skills through creative exercises and musical concepts. From building lifelong practice habits to exploring philosophical ideas about music and musical spirit, Coffin has codified the materials that made him one of today's most recognized saxophonists and educators.
How to Use This Method Book
You'll need a metronome, tuner, patience, and consistent practice habits. The books are designed for self-progression, though Jeff recommends private instruction when possible. Start with Book 1, exercise #1. Choose a slow tempo and begin playing. Increase tempo as you become comfortable with each exercise. Repetition is essential—through repetition comes mastery.
Expected Results
Working through these fundamentals produces rapid improvements in listening, tone, dynamics, intonation, articulation, rhythm, time, and harmony understanding. Professional musicians continue working on fundamentals throughout their careers. After completing these 3 volumes, students gain deeper understanding of fundamentals plus high-level technical proficiency and musical competency on their instrument. Seasoned players will find fresh approaches to familiar material using this tried and true method.
Development History
For over 15 years, since his early Bela Fleck & the Flecktones days, Coffin developed this material. He began compiling exercises in Finale and Sibelius for his students, avoiding repetitive handwriting. This evolved into hundreds of pages of personal exercises entered into computer software. The result represents hundreds, likely thousands, of hours creating these books in the clearest, most concise way possible to benefit students.
