The Ruin of Angels: A Novel of the Craft Sequence
Max Gladstone delivers the sixth installment in the Hugo-nominated Craft Sequence with The Ruin of Angels, a standalone urban fantasy novel set in the reconstructed city of Agdel Lex. Co-author of the viral New York Times bestseller This is How You Lose the Time War, Gladstone crafts a world where dead gods litter the desert and streets shift when no one's watching.
Plot and Setting
A century and a half after the God Wars destroyed Alikand, the city of Agdel Lex rises from its ruins. The foreign Iskari Rectification Authority maintains strict order while treasure seekers, combat librarians, nightmare artists, angels, demons, and grad students converge in the ever-changing alleys. A squidlike tower dominates the skyline, and the city itself refuses to stay still.
Priestess and investment banker Kai Pohala, last seen in Full Fathom Five, arrives to corner Agdel Lex's nightmare startup scene and reconnect with her estranged sister Lei. She finds Lei at the center of a shadowy business deal that's rapidly unraveling. When Lei becomes wanted for a crime she actually committed, Kai races to find her before the Authority does.
The Craft Sequence Reading Order
While each novel stands alone, the complete Craft Sequence includes:
1. Three Parts Dead
2. Two Serpents Rise
3. Full Fathom Five
4. Last First Snow
5. Four Roads Cross
6. Ruin of Angels
The series continues with The Craft Wars: Dead Country and Wicked Problems.
Critical Acclaim
The Washington Post calls the Craft Sequence "the best kind of urban fantasy" while NPR describes it as "sharp, original, and passionate." Max Gladstone, a Yale graduate and two-time John W. Campbell Award finalist, was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award and brings his signature blend of financial magic systems and theological worldbuilding to this occupied city narrative.
What Makes This Novel Unique
The story combines heist elements with political occupation, featuring Lei's plans for a daring raid into the god-haunted desert with her ex-girlfriend. The question remains: is Alikand truly dead, or do some want to finish what the God Wars started? This paperback edition from Tor Books delivers complex characters navigating a city where reality itself is negotiable.
