Homer is a classical writer about whom little is known. He was considered by the ancient Greeks to be the greatest epic poet for his works, The Iliad and The Odyssey, two poems that have had a lasting influence on Western literature.

Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was an English novelist and critic, best known for the novels Erewhon (1872) and The Way of All Flesh (1903). Butler also examined Christian orthodoxy, evolutionary thought, and Italian art, and crafted a famous prosed translation of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey epic poems (1900) that are still consulted today.
