The Number Six: The Holding Midfielder and the Quiet Control of Football - Paperback

The number six is one of football's most important roles, yet one of its least understood. He may not score the goal, play the final pass, or dominate the highlights, but he often decides whether a team can truly function.

The Number Six: The Holding Midfielder and the Quiet Control of Football is a clear, plain-English tactical history of the holding midfielder: the player who protects the defence, connects the build-up, controls tempo, resists pressure, covers full-backs, stops counters, and gives creative players the freedom to attack.

From the old half-back to the defensive shield, from the destroyer to the deep-lying playmaker, from the Makélélé role to modern positional controllers such as Busquets and Rodri, this book explains how the number six became central to modern football. It explores single pivots, double pivots, pressing, rest defence, tactical fouls, passing angles, data, recruitment, coaching, women's football, and the hidden intelligence behind midfield control.

Written for football supporters, coaches, players, students of tactics, and curious readers, this book shows why the quietest midfielder on the pitch may be the one making the game make sense.
