The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories Part XVII: Whatever Remains Must Be the Truth (1891-1898)

Part XVII of the acclaimed MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories series presents 49 new mysteries set during the Victorian era (1891-1898). This collection follows the tradition established in 2015 when the series launched, featuring adventures written by leading Sherlockian authors from around the world, all set within the correct historical time period.

This volume forms part of the three-volume set Whatever Remains Must Be the Truth, which explores Holmes's encounters with seemingly impossible events. Each story challenges the detective with cases involving ghosts and hauntings, cults and curses, mythical beasts and mediums, angels and demons. Despite these supernatural elements, Holmes approaches each problem with his characteristic rationalism, applying his famous maxim: "When you have eliminated the impossible whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

The collection maintains Holmes's flat-footed stance on the ground, as expressed in "The Sussex Vampire": "This agency stands flat-footed upon the ground, and there it must remain. The world is big enough for us. No ghosts need apply." Yet these tales push the boundaries between the impossible and the improbable, testing the detective's deductive methods against cases that defy conventional explanation.

Since A Study in Scarlet first introduced Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson in 1887, the Canon has included only sixty original tales published between 1887 and 1927. This collection joins thousands of additional Holmes adventures across various media, continuing the tradition for readers who believe it is always 1895 on Baker Street.

The forty-nine stories honor "the best and wisest" man Watson ever knew, presenting some of the finest new Holmesian storytelling available. All royalties from this collection are donated for the preservation of Undershaw, one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's former homes.
