The Mayor of Folsom Street: The Auto/Biography of "Daddy Alan" Selby aka Mr. S

This biography chronicles the remarkable life of Alan Selby, the London immigrant who became a legendary figure in San Francisco's LGBTQ+ community as the founder of the iconic Mr. S Leather Store on Folsom Street. The book offers an intimate portrait of a man who shaped leather culture and served as a vital community leader during one of the most challenging periods in gay history.

Dual Narrative Structure

The book presents Selby's story through two distinct voices. Dr. Jordy Jones, a close associate of the late Mr. Selby, provides a comprehensive biographical introduction that traces Selby's journey from London to San Francisco. The second portion consists of an autobiography constructed directly from Selby's personal journals, offering readers unfiltered access to his thoughts, experiences, and perspectives during pivotal moments in LGBTQ+ history.

Historical Significance

Alan Selby's Mr. S Leather Store became more than a business—it was a cultural landmark on Folsom Street and a gathering place for the leather community. During the AIDS crisis, Selby emerged as a key figure, demonstrating leadership and compassion when the community needed it most. This book documents his contributions to gay rights, community organizing, and the preservation of leather culture in San Francisco.
