It's the early 1990s and Hugh Gallon has recently finished his sixth - form exams and looking forward to starting university. He is offered a summer job digging the roads and he sees this as a chance to live out the tales of the rough camaraderie of the navvy life told to him by his much-loved grandfather and to connect with the Irish immigrant community his wealthy parents believe that they have risen above. Yet despite his comfortable, middle-class upbringing he has a fighting man's spirit bred into his bones whose history will split his family apart, a history that leads him question what it is to be a man.
