Diarmuid Luby was born in County Clare and spent his early career between Dublin and the subcontinent, developing a deep fascination with the civilisations of ancient South Asia that has shaped his writing ever since. A historian by training with a particular interest in the ancient world's first experiments in large-scale governance, he has written extensively on the empires, rebellions, and political thinkers of the pre-modern era. His work is driven by the conviction that the ancient Indian tradition of statecraft deserves the same sustained narrative attention as the better-known political histories of Greece and Rome. This book is his most ambitious undertaking to date.
