The chequered life of Ludolph the Carthusian (c. 1295-1378) found its spiritual contentment in the writing of his colossal work on the Vita Jesu Christi in Latin. The book on the Life of Christ occupied some forty years of Ludolph's life in a charterhouse in Mainz. It has been styled as a summa evangelica and as it contains a series of meditations, spiritual instructions and prayers, it has also served to many a medieval scholar as a collation of dogmatic and moral dissertations. These are still worthy of great note today as they were mostly prior to the pre-Reformation period of the Roman Church. Since the early years of first going to the press in Latin the book has been printed in some sixty editions and translations. These have often served as an inspirational source of meditation, contemplation and prayer to several saintly figures. In this novel work the translator tends to offer a popular edition of a vivid picture of Jesus' life and that of his immediate followers as seen through the eyes of a medieval writer. The book has also during the ages aroused reverential awe urged by the words, signs and doings of Jesus in a historical situation very much parallel to the convolutions of our times. With many a Christian presently desiring to return to the early Church founded by Jesus as witnessed in the Gospel, this is a source of inspirational beauty and practical activism as to what it means to follow Jesus. It is also a precious Speculum vitae Christi, or Mirror of the Life of Christ, for any present-day disciple's formative life in a community, like that of the early disciples and apostles who knew Christ very directly.

Cauchi, Victor: - Describing himself as a Carthusian at heart and a Jesuit in spirit and action, Victor Cauchi was born in 1950 on the island where St Paul was shipwrecked some two thousand years ago. Malta has always been seen as a bastion of the Catholic faith and a cultural crossroad between the Byzantine and Roman rites of Christianity and Islam. After receiving a Jesuit education for eight years, the translator was for a time a postulant with the Carthusians at the Order's novitiate at the Farneta Charterhouse in Lucca, Italy. Trained as a lawyer he has worked as a solicitor in private practice since 1974, joining government service at Malta's Attorney General's Office in 1983 where he served until retirement in 2011. His verve for translation was mainly induced in 1985 with the translation of local legislation from English to Maltese and vice-versa.As the need for a well organised team of permanent translators grew in view of Malta's accession to the European Union, he was entrusted with supervising the translation into Maltese of the voluminous EU acquis communautaire and the Union's case-law. He attended various conferences at the time in EU countries on the subject. His flair for translations into English from Italian and Spanish, as well as Latin and Middle English, started about his reaching pension age and he has to date translated further works of a spiritual nature, like the Discourses of Isaiah of Schetis, into Maltese. He has also had a brush with novel and playwriting. Steeped in Catholic church movements, he has been married for over forty years to Marie Therese and they have one daughter, Rebekah.
