I dropped to my knees. Nick was lying on the floor. He hated the exam table. I lifted his head by his chin. His eyes were half-closed, cloudy mucus filled the corners of his eye. There was no longer any black in his muzzle, and gray hair streaked the rest of his coat. I stroked his head and allowed him to lower it back to his paws. I placed a rubber band tourniquet above his elbow and felt to make sure he had a favorable vein. This needed to be a quick procedure. Nick hated this place, and I didn't want to put him through any more than necessary. from "Rosie" - Last Cow in the Chute______________In this second edition of real-life tales from Dr. David E. Larsen's forty years of veterinary practice in a small community in western Oregon, David has added more engaging stories that reflect the respect for and dedicated care to the animals he has treated, in all sizes from bulls to mice. In addition to the stories originally included in The Last Cow in the Chute, David has added new stories, like the poignant "It's Only a Bump, Doc", and introduces us to a biting chichuaha named Fang. Readers will find first-edition favorites like "Snake Bit in Sweet Home," and "Last Cow in the Chute." All stories continue to draw upon the vast experience of David's training applying the art of veterinary care to sick animals, and as well as compassion, humor, and education to grateful humans.

Larsen, DVM David E.: - Dr. David E. Larsen grew up on a farm in the Coquille River Valley of Southwestern Oregon. Animals and their care have always been a big part of his life from the time he was young, but it took four years in the Army to give him the maturity he needed to complete his education. He graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in zoology, then attended Colorado State University and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1975 at age thirty. With a growing family, he moved first to Enumclaw, Washington, then moved to Sweet Home, Oregon, and started the Sweet Home Veterinary Clinic, and practiced there for over forty years before he retired. Today he spends his time with his family, writing and doing a little fishing. Interested in seeing much more of Oregon and the rest of this country, Dave and his wife, Sandy, are eager to travel when they can.
