The Kitchen Chronicles: 1001 Lunches with J. Krishnamurti

Michael Krohnen's memoir offers an intimate window into the daily life of one of the 20th century's most influential spiritual teachers, Jiddu Krishnamurti. Written from the unique perspective of Krishnamurti's personal chef, this book captures the extraordinary humanity of a liberated being through ordinary moments shared in the kitchen.

A Chef's Perspective on a Spiritual Teacher

This memoir presents J. Krishnamurti not as a distant philosophical figure, but as a living, breathing person with a profound sense of humor and genuine warmth. Through regular interactions during meal preparation and dining, Krohnen documents conversations that reveal both the lighter and more serious aspects of Krishnamurti's teaching. The kitchen becomes a sacred space where wisdom and daily life intersect naturally.

From the Author's Foreword to the 2nd Edition

J. Krishnamurti's long and creative life ended in 1986. Subsequently, it took me about ten years to originally compose this book. It was first published in 1997. It presents a view of a great, liberated human being's daily life, from the perspective of his chef who had regular interaction with him. This memoir aims to convey his great sense of humor, to share his anecdotes and jokes, but also to touch on the more serious aspects of his teaching. This second edition keeps a memoir in print that aims to present Krishnamurti in his everyday life-sharing one person's perception of this most extraordinary human being. He lived the teachings.

What You'll Discover

The Kitchen Chronicles goes beyond traditional biographical accounts. Readers gain access to Krishnamurti's anecdotes, jokes, and spontaneous teachings that emerged during daily life. The book demonstrates how Krishnamurti embodied his philosophy in every moment, making his teachings accessible through the lens of shared meals and kitchen conversations.

A Unique Addition to Krishnamurti Literature

First published in 1997 and now available in its second edition, this memoir fills a distinct niche in the body of work about J. Krishnamurti. While many books analyze his philosophical teachings, The Kitchen Chronicles reveals the person behind the philosophy—a man who lived his teachings authentically in everyday circumstances.
