DeCandido, Keith R. A.: - Keith R.A. DeCandido's first short story and first novel were both collaborative Spider-Man tales: "An Evening in the Bronx with Venom" (with John Gregory Betancourt) in 1994's The Ultimate Spider-Man and Venom's Wrath (with José R. Nieto) in 1998. He has continued to write a ton of superheroes in prose, including several more Marvel short stories between 1994 and 2000, a solo Spider-Man novel in 2005, a trilogy of Thor novels from 2015-2017, three stories for Michael Jan Friedman's shared-world superhero anthologies Phenomenons from 2022-2024, a Green Hornet & Kato short story in 2026, and, since 2011, various works in his self-created setting of the Super City Police Department. In addition, he has written other works that take place in the 1970s: the 2006 Buffy the Vampire Slayer novel Blackout and the 2016 Limbus Inc. novella "Right On, Sister!" Beyond the above, Keith has written fiction in more than thirty different licensed universes from Alien to Zorro, including TV shows (Star Trek, Supernatural), games (World of Warcraft, Resident Evil), movies (Cars, Serenity), and literary characters (Sherlock Holmes, Joe Ledger). He also has several other original novel series going, including the long-running fantasy/police procedurals that started with Dragon Precinct, the Adventures of Bram Gold (urban fantasy set in the Bronx, including A Furnace Sealed and Feat of Clay), and Supernatural Crimes Unit: NYPD, a new series that features cops that deal with crimes involving magic and monsters. Keith also has several short-story recurring characters, including Cassie Zukav (a weirdness magnet in Key West, whose tales have been collected in Ragnarok and Roll and Ragnarok and a Hard Place), Ticonderoga Beck and the Stalwart Squad (1930s pulp adventure in the Thrilling Adventure Yarns anthology series), Signora Spada (a steampunk swordswoman who has appeared in the Forgotten Lore anthology series, as well as Weird Tales magazine), and Connie de la Vega (an engineer on the moon in the Brave New Girls and Beyond the Cradle anthology series). Keith's prognostications on popular culture have appeared in a variety of sources ranging from periodicals like Entertainment Weekly, Star Trek Magazine, and Library Journal to anthologies from ATB, Becky Books, Crazy 8 Press, Smart Pop, and White Rocket Books to his Patreon (patreon.com/krad) and newsletter (krad.substack.com). But most of it has been for the award-winning web site Reactor Magazine, for which he has been writing on a weekly (or more often) basis since 2011. In addition, Keith is a musician (he plays percussion with Boogie Knights and the Chris Abbott Band), a martial artist (a fourth-degree black belt in karate), and an editor (he's been editing fiction and curating anthologies since the early 1990s). He has twice been awarded for his body of work, by the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers with a Faust Award in 2009 and by the New England Science Fiction Association with a Skylark in 2026.
