The First Rung - Paperback

The First Rung

Hulda is driven by one goal: to prove herself by breaking a world record in ice swimming. Years of relentless training have taught her to push through pain, ignore fear, and keep moving no matter the cost.

But when a routine training session ends in disaster, everything she thought she knew is torn away.

She awakens in a world that should not exist.

Far from home and stripped of the life she remembers, Hulda finds herself on a vast steppe where survival depends on strangers whose motives are never entirely clear. Every person she meets seems to know more about her than she knows about herself. Some risk everything to protect her. Others are willing to kill to claim her. Caught between shifting loyalties, ancient traditions, and ruthless ambition, Hulda is forced to question not only who she can trust, but who she really is.

As fragments of another life begin to surface, two realities start to blur. Memories interrupt the present, familiar voices echo across impossible distances, and every answer seems to create even more questions. Is she living a new life, remembering an old one, or trapped somewhere between the two?

At its heart, The First Rung is a story about identity, resilience, memory, and the choices that define us. It explores how far we are willing to push ourselves in pursuit of our goals, and what remains when certainty disappears.

Blending psychological suspense, speculative fiction, mystery, and adventure, this fast-paced novella takes readers from the frozen waters of Finland to an unforgettable journey across an unfamiliar world where nothing is quite what it seems.

Perfect for readers who enjoy thought-provoking speculative fiction with strong emotional stakes, compelling characters, and a mystery that unfolds one revelation at a time, The First Rung asks a simple but unsettling question:

What if surviving was only the beginning?
