The Death of Death in the Death of Christ by John Owen

This 2016 reprint faithfully reproduces the 1959 edition of John Owen's masterwork on the atonement of Christ. Reprinted from Volume Two of Owen's ten-volume Works, originally published in 1852 by Johnstone and Hunter, Edinburgh, this full facsimile edition preserves the integrity of the original text without optical recognition software distortion.

A Definitive Treatment of Christ's Atonement

John Owen examines the atonement in comprehensive detail, presenting what many scholars regard as the most thorough treatment of this doctrine ever written. This work defends the purposeful and actual procurement of salvation for sinners through Christ's death on the cross. Owen argues that the triune God's purpose is to glorify himself and save sinners through the perfect work of Christ.

Beyond Polemics: Understanding the Perfect Work of Christ

While often characterized as a polemical defense of the Calvinistic understanding of limited atonement, this work extends far beyond theological debate. Owen presents a comprehensive defense of Christ's perfect work, which actually obtained salvation on the cross rather than merely making it possible. The text explores how Christ's death accomplished its intended purpose completely and effectively.

About John Owen (1616-1683)

John Owen served as an early Puritan advocate of Congregationalism and Reformed theology. Educated at Queen's College, Oxford, he held significant positions under Oliver Cromwell's Puritan government, serving as Cromwell's personal chaplain and later as vice-chancellor of Oxford. A contemporary of John Bunyan, Owen produced an extensive body of work comprising twenty-eight books on theological and devotional themes. His later years were devoted to pastoral ministry, where he became the leading spokesman for Protestant Nonconformists.
