The Church of the Fathers by St. John Henry Newman is a work of history and theology that offers a powerful portrait of the Catholicity of early Christianity. Originally published in 1840, Newman's work serves as both a historical narrative of the fourth century and a profound argument for the continuity of Christian doctrine.
In this first volume, Newman masterfully brings to life the titans of the early Church-St. Augustine, St. Basil, and St. Gregory-exploring their struggles against heresy, their devotion to asceticism, and their defense of the Church's independence from secular power. He also explores these themes through the rejection of heretics.
More than just a historical study, Newman uses these ancient examples to champion:
- The vital importance of apostolic succession;
- The power of the sacraments;
- The essential role of sacred tradition in maintaining authentic faith.
Discover the authentic Catholicism of antiquity through its greatest figures and explore the arguments of St. John Henry Newman, now a doctor of the Church.
