This is the full story of the Hussite revolution, from the Western Schism that first cracked papal authority, through Jan Hus's martyrdom at Constance, to Jan Zizka's wagon forts breaking armies of professional knights, to the catastrophic afternoon at Lipany when the movement finally turned its own weapons on itself. It traces the Four Articles of Prague from manifesto to battle cry to negotiated compromise, and follows the thread forward, through Martin Luther's startled discovery that he was "a Hussite without knowing it," to a Czech nation that, five centuries later, would inscribe Hus's dying words onto the standard of its own president.
Malachy Tiernan is an Irish historian based in County Clare whose work focuses on the religious upheavals of medieval Central Europe. A graduate of University College Cork with a background in ecclesiastical history, Tiernan first encountered the Hussite story while researching parallels between Bohemian and Irish traditions of resistance to centralized religious authority, and has returned to the period repeatedly in the years since. His writing is grounded in primary chronicle sources and combines the narrative pace of popular history with a historian's insistence on getting the dates right. He has a particular interest in how medieval religious movements shape modern national identity - a theme that runs throughout his work on Bohemia and beyond. This is his first full-length study of the Hussite Wars.
