R, C. M.: - C. M. R. was raised in Los Angeles and experienced the harsh realities of gang culture, despite coming from a two-parent home background. Gang culture's traditions, affiliations, and generational norms affected his home, family, friends, schools, and community, influencing him and ultimately leading him down the proverbial pipeline to prison, resulting in decades of incarceration. While incarcerated, he pursued higher education, earning degrees in Social and Behavioral Sciences and in Communication. Dedicated to self-development and service, he became a Certified Peer Literacy Mentor through the Division of Rehabilitation Programs' (DRP) Office of Correctional Education (OCE) and a Substance Use Disorder Registered Counselor 1 (SUDRC 1) through the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's (CDCR) Occupational Mentor Certification Program (OMCP).
