Günther Rüdiger was born in Dresden in 1944 and received is education in astrophysics at Friedrich-Schiller University Jena through 1963-1968. From 1968-2009 he worked in Potsdam (until 1983 Astrophysikalisches Observatorium Potsdam), He has been Member of Evaluating Committee of DARA (Extraterrestric research) from 1991-1996. From 1992-2009 he was head of the section MHD and Turbulence in Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam.
1995 he became Professor for Astrophysics at the University of Potsdam. In 1998 he was was Visiting Professor Dept. Applied Math. at University of Newcastle upon Tyne. In 2008 he received the Wissenschaftspreis Stifterverband der deutschen Wissenschaft (with F. Stefani, Dresden-Rossendorf). Prof Rüdiger is author of 3 monographs: Rüdiger: Differential rotation and stellar convection (Gordon& Breach, 1989), Rüdiger/Hollerbach: The magnetic Universe (Wiley, 2004) Rüdiger/Hollerbach/Kitchatinov: Magnetic processes in astrophysics (Wiley, 2013). He published 266 refereed publicatitions. For 15 years he was the Managing Editor of Astronomical News / Astronomische Nachrichten (Wiley).
