The Anxious Bench (1844) - Paperback

The Anxious Bench is a book written by John Williamson Nevin in 1844. It is a theological work that explores the role of emotions in religious experience, particularly in the context of revivalism. Nevin argues that the emphasis on emotional conversion experiences, such as the ""anxious bench"" used in revivalist meetings, can lead to a shallow and unsustainable faith. He advocates for a more intellectual and contemplative approach to Christianity, grounded in historical and theological traditions. Nevin's ideas were controversial at the time, as they challenged the popular revivalist movement of the mid-19th century. The Anxious Bench remains a significant work in the history of American Protestantism, and continues to be studied by scholars of theology and religious studies. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
