In The Abandoned House, novelist Lillie B. Allen tells the heartwarming story of two little boys. They were about the same age and lived just across the street from each other, so they quickly became close friends and did many things together. As the boys grew, however, it became apparent that one of them had a distinct advantage in life. It wasn't the financial level of their parents. In fact, the poorer boy had the advantage over the richer boy. It wasn't the school they attended. In fact, they attended the same school. It wasn't any of the things we normally think of that we believe gives us a leg up in life. In fact, it wasn't really anything the boys themselves did at all. No, the factor that made the difference in their lives was how they were raised.
Yes, how the boys were raised affected their decision making at every age. It followed them, not only into their teenage years, but for many years to come. This charming novel is a true-to-life illustration of the biblical truth:
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6
