In the summer of 1943, although World War II is ravaging Europe nations as well as many Pacific islands, life is back to "normal" for Charlottesville farm teens James Baker and his sister Natalia. One year earlier they were almost murdered by their Nazi neighbor Otto Herman and a second German agent, after James and "Nat" discovered the pair was part of a secret ring bent on stealing US atomic secrets. Now another wartime school year is nearing a close, and the brother and sister are making the best of farm chores, schoolwork, dating, and looking forward to summer fun. But mysteries cloud the horizon when Ernie Herbert arrives with dangerous intentions, the high school baseball seasons winds toward a dramatic end, and Zeke Baker, their father, is attracted to a seductive widow who is concealing her flawed character. Seeing the multiple threats, James, conscientious and clever, again summons his investigative prowess. But can he act in time to save his sister, his father, and perhaps his own life?
