Sweet Sorrow - Paperback

Only weeks after the mysterious death of Lord Kitchener, British intelligence uncovers evidence that Germany's hidden war is entering a dangerous new phase.

Across Europe and America, spies, saboteurs and diplomats work in the shadows, while behind seemingly ordinary shipments a far more sinister plan is taking shape. Modern science is being harnessed to transform one of mankind's oldest weapons into an instrument of industrial warfare.

Drawn once more into the conflict, intelligence officer Christopher Hubert and Scotland Yard detective Anne Banfield find themselves pursuing an elusive network of agents whose operations stretch from London to New York, Scandinavia and the frozen wilderness of northern Finland. Every discovery leads deeper into a conspiracy where patriotism, deception and scientific ambition collide, and where failure could cost far more than military defeat.

Inspired by extraordinary but little-known events of the First World War, Sweet Sorrow blends real people and documented history with gripping fiction to reveal a secret conflict fought far beyond the trenches. Meticulously researched and grounded in documented historical events, Sweet Sorrow reveals a remarkable chapter of the First World War that has remained largely forgotten.
