Standing Rock Sioux: A Photographic Journey Through Dakota History
Standing Rock Sioux presents a comprehensive visual documentation of one of the Great Plains' most significant tribal communities. Author Donovin Arleigh Sprague, an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux and Director of Education at the Crazy Horse Memorial, brings together rare photographs, personal interviews, and oral histories to chronicle the Standing Rock Reservation's cultural legacy.
The Legend of the Standing Rock
At the heart of this historical account stands a rock of incredible legend. According to Dakota tradition, when a man took a second wife, his first wife's pride was wounded. As the tribe prepared to move camp, she refused to leave, remaining behind with her baby. When the husband's brothers returned to collect her, they discovered she and her child had turned to stone. This sacred stone traveled with the tribe, always positioned at the center of camp as a place of honor. Today, it rests upon a brick pedestal at the Standing Rock Agency, giving the reservation its name.
Donovin Arleigh Sprague brings unique credentials to this work as an educator, historian, and tribal member. His previous work includes Cheyenne River Sioux (Arcadia, 2003). As an instructor at Black Hills State University, Oglala Lakota College, and the Indian University of North America at Crazy Horse Memorial, Sprague combines academic rigor with intimate cultural knowledge.
