When sixteen-year-old Laila finds her mother unconscious after a stroke, the last person she expects to come for her is Jimmy, the father she has spent six years learning how to live without.

With her mother facing weeks of inpatient recovery, Laila has little choice but to climb into Jimmy's rental car and follow him south toward the Florida coast she barely remembers. What begins as an uneasy road trip between strangers becomes a tour through the remnants of their shared past: roadside dives, old friends, forgotten beaches, eccentric artists, waterfront musicians, and a version of her father that doesn't quite resemble the man she has been taught to resent.

Jimmy, meanwhile, knows better than to expect forgiveness. He can't undo the divorce, the years away, or the depression father and daughter may share. He can only keep driving, answer what Laila is finally willing to ask, and hope there is still enough road between them to set some of the story straight.
