Why is South Africa failing, and what would it take to begin again?

Something in South Africa has come undone. The lights fail. The taps run dry. The trains stop. A generation waits for work that never arrives, and a nation that once promised itself a new dawn cannot say, plainly, what went wrong.

South Africa Unmade offers an answer. Reasoning from the effects every South African can see back to the causes beneath them, it argues that the country's decline is not an accident, not mere corruption, and not the failure of any single party. It is the predictable outcome of four foundations laid over a century and never yet mended: a fractured authority that never settled to whom it answers, an ideological statism that made the state the source of all things, an entitlement and resentment bred in citizens taught to wait, and a government overreach that has grown to fill every space a family, a community, and a conscience once held.

Chapter by chapter, the book traces this chain from its roots in a divided house of authority, through a state that made itself saviour, into a politics of grievance, and finally into a government that overreached into the very ground of the family. It closes not in despair but in recovery - naming what authority, competence, and moral formation would look like restored, and pointing toward the harder work of rebuilding still to come.

Written for Christians who love their country and refuse to look away, this is a diagnosis offered without rancour and without despair, in the conviction that a nation which understands how it was unmade can begin, at last, to imagine how it might be remade.

South Africa Unmade is the first book in the A Nation Under Heaven series.
