I have lived and worked in San Diego Ca. since 1983 but was born in Northwest Missouri in 1960. My early years at school were not a success until my father intervened and demanded they teach me something. He knew the value of education. Bruce Catton's Gettysburg is the first book i can remember reading numerous times.
I have always been a history nut. When and where did it happen? Why did it happen as they said it did, vs. how it actually did? Who did it happen to? This has been an intense interest since childhood.
The first poem i wrote was Lament for a Cold October Thursday. I was told at the time, that as a poem, it suffered some structural issues. But as a description of what it was like to be in a small metal tube while the day went from, oh dear, to OH SHIT, to, I'm not gunna live through this, it excelled. Hopefully my writing skills have improved over the years.
But my goal in all this is to bring the reader along, What it felt like, what it sounded like. The SHhhInngg of a blade sliding off Maille. The sound of it hitting true, and shearing through it, and it's wearer. The stuttering thunder as the Pratt and Whitney is starved for oil, and beings to fail. To go in areas of humanity that our society has tried very hard to get us to ignore for decades. We can no longer afford to do so. This book is an open window into where we came from, and likely where we're going. Will you look through?
