Raymond Sutherland is a British Caribbean author and educator from Salford, England, and the creator of the interconnected VevéVerse universe. His work blends Caribbean spirituality, Celtic mythology, urban fantasy, crime fiction, historical fantasy, and social commentary into mythic stories centred on identity, justice, inheritance, and survival.
Inspired by family, heritage, and the stories of people often forgotten by history, Sutherland's writing explores the emotional and spiritual weight carried across generations. His characters range from spirit marked children and haunted revolutionaries to fighters, kings, vigilantes, and wandering souls navigating worlds shaped by power, grief, mercy, and consequence.
Alongside darker adult works such as the Shadow and Dreadrick stories, he also writes middle grade and young adult novels inspired by his daughters, including Rayah of Dantor and Rivvon. Many of the emotional foundations of the VevéVerse are drawn from his own family, with the character of Obasi inspired by his late father and Mama Elizabeth inspired by his mother.
